On April 26th, 2023, I attended the Science Gong Show to give a pop-scientific talk. Gratefully, I was voted as one of the audience’s favorite speakers!

The show

The Science Gong Show is held by Project Bridge. Here’s the description of this event from the website of Project Bridge:

The Science Gong Show is a science communication event where local scientists have a short amount of time to describe their work to an audience of non-scientists. Importantly the audience has cowbells which they can ring whenever they hear any jargon.

Moreover, when the audience rings the cowbell like crazy, the host strikes a gong to ask the speaker to explain the jargon. That’s where the name of the show comes from! This show has seen a hiatus for two years for the reason everyone is familiar with – the COVID pandemic. Therefore, it was my great honor to be a speaker of this event after its revival. Including myself, 10 excellent speakers shared their thought-provoking research projects in a language accessible for lay people. The topics of the talks ranged from mosquitos to antimatter, that was a great journey! What’s more, the talks themselves were greatly entertaining.

The talks

The title of my talk is “When your brain gets a code“, which was about my research project in programming code comprehension. Here’s a list of all the talks:

  1. Egg-cellent Choice or The Wonders of Mosquito Jizz by Margot Wohl
  2. Modeling Sensing and Control in Animals by Michael Wilkinson
  3. How Artificial Intelligence designs stronger structures by Ashwini Gupta
  4. Conversation in a Cafeteria by Karan Thakkar
  5. Technology for the diagnosis and monitoring of Parkinson’s disease and related conditions by James Brasic
  6. How to not fall over: 101 by Bassil Ramadan
  7. When your brain gets a code by Yun-Fei Liu
  8. Synchrony in Cortical Neurons During Decision-Making by Simon Locke
  9. How Glass Breaks? by Paul Desmarchelier
  10. Does anti-matter matter? by Beatriz Tapia Oregui

After all speakers finished their talks, the audience voted for their favorite talks. I had the great pleasure to receive the audience choice award along with Ms. Margot Wohl and Ms. Tapia Oregui. The prize was a tiny gong, which I can use to … I don’t know. Anyway, I’m glad to have a gong. It will definitely come handy someday!
