Attending the 2024 BMM Summer School at the MBL was a transformative experience for me as a postdoctoral researcher in cognitive neuroscience. My primary research focuses on the neuroscience of programming, and I wasn’t very familiar with many of the advanced machine learning techniques that were emphasized in this program. However, this made the experience even more enriching, as I was able to immerse myself in a diverse range of cutting-edge topics and techniques outside of my usual expertise.

The summer school provided an exceptional opportunity to learn from world-renowned experts in computational neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and cognitive science. Through a series of engaging lectures and hands-on tutorials, I gained a deeper understanding of machine learning methods that are increasingly relevant to my work. Concepts such as deep learning and neural network modeling, which were initially vaguely understood, became much clearer thanks to the interactive learning environment.

What truly stood out was the interdisciplinary nature of the event. Collaborating with fellow attendees from various fields gave me new perspectives on my own research. Conversations with peers who specialize in areas like computational modeling and AI not only helped me expand my knowledge but also sparked fresh ideas about how to incorporate machine learning into my studies on the neural mechanisms underlying programming.

Thank everyone for enjoying my talk about the final project of the course. The project is about an attempt to use recurrent neural network to analyze the data I have for programming code comprehension. The project didn’t yield exciting results, but I’m now more confident in applying artificial neural network methods to data analysis!

This is my design of the logo for this year’s BMM summer school. It was not adopted eventually, but I’m proud of my design, so here it is. The brain obviously symbolizes the “brain“; the pedestal symbolizes the layers often used in the illustrations of neural network structures, which is the “machine“; and the eye at the center (the O or the 0) symbolizes the “mind“.
